Claymator Adam Elliot's semi-autobiographical short film trilogy, each painting a portrait of another family member, Uncle (1996), Cousin (1998), and his brother (1999), announces the arrival of the new fantasy talent. His first forays in the art of claymation, preceding his Academy award winning Harvie Krumpet (2003) for several years, are an absolute joy. Although the joy is perhaps not quite the right word, because terrifically rich stories poured a lot of pathos.
Uncle (1996), is an eccentric and loving man who paints with Smiley Faces food and dresses up like Santa Claus every year, the life force drains away gradually after a series of personal losses. His wife commits suicide, which he manages to deal with, but when his faithful dog Reg is run over by a skateboard goes into terminal decline and end day in the nursing home.
Cousin (1998), is a cousin Adam and childhood friend, who suffers from cerebral palsy. They smell of licorice, cakes, baking, collecting a finger-nail, one-armed play cricket, super-hero costume bears a childhood friendship is cruelly ended by tragedy, when the cousin's parents are killed in a car accident, and he will be taken to live in a group home in another country.
Brother (1999), is the most ambitious of the trilogy, containing a few characters in one story. We placed on the mother, who cuts hair and sells the age of dough on the footie, crippled alcoholic father, who was once an acrobat, big-headed neighbor with hostility the prostitutes and accountants, and, of course, brother, mischievous child with severe asthma and one lens blacked out in glasses. Adam and his brother enjoy digging football at their father's undies and watching cartoons on Saturday morning.
Elliot's animation style is very frugal, hard-flow within the frame and the camera itself does not move all. Every movement is created by editing. Cut a wide shot of a close cousin of a jar of toe-nails and back, creating a kineticism enough to keep up the narrative. Colors are largely in place of gray and black, with an occasional burst muted color that perfectly matches the sad stories and the beautiful melancholy of outstanding narration by William McInnes's.
One comes from this wonderful collection of films from different feeling He spent much time with these people. We believe that we know them. We take care of them. We are them. Eliot portraits are so important, so enriched the life of that We can even be moved to shed a tear for what is essentially just a piece of plasticine.
Devastatingly beautiful portrait of our lives.
