5 year old scared of everything?
My 5 year old son is scared to be alone. And I don’t mean alone in an unsafe way, I mean like in a room alone– even the one next to the one I am in. Our downstairs has an open floor plan with the kitchen and living area separated by one step. He will NOT enter the living room without someone in that room. Being one step up is not acceptable to him.
He is a huge fan of kids “scary” shows like Scooby Doo. He also loves to talk about scary things. He even insisted that his Halloween costume be really scary.
So I know he has a great imagination and loves the titillation of spooky things, but the fear is so frustrating. I am sure a couple of you are saying “don’t let him watch scary shows like Scooby Doo. We tried this for over a month– to no avail.
Have any of you been through this? What are your recommendations? It’s frustrating to have someone almost wet their pants because they won’t walk into the bathroom if you’re not in there. Or to never get to pee alone yourself…
Children’s imagination at his age is rich. They put two and two together and draw their own conclusions. They connect everything with themselves. An imaginary friend who shows up now and then – daring to go into the bathroom or room alone, for example – is a sign of a normal healthy imagination. His imaginations have developed to the stage where he can put himself in other people’s shoes and pictures dangers that he haven’t actually experience.
You cannot banish all fears from your child’s imagination. So help him to learn constructive ways to cope with and conquer those fears. Try to reassure him. This is more a matter of your manner than your words. Be impatient with him or try to argue him out of his fear. If he wants to talk about it, as a few children do, let him. Give him the feeling that you want to understand but are absolutely certain that nothing bad will happen to him. Try to overcome his fears by making up games about it. If he is afraid of this imaginary friend who appears if he is alone, play games in which he became the master of this “friend”.
Arrange to give him a full, outgoing life with other children everyday. The more he is absorbed in games and plans, the less he will worry about his inner fears.
